Exemplaria's Symposium is a great success

What is “surface reading”? How have we been called to attend textual surfaces, and what are the implications of such a call in our current intellectual climate?  More specifically, how does such a call to the surface affect medieval and early modern studies, subfields that have had vexed relations to critical theory and teeter at the edge of “relevance” and usefulness?

On the 9th February 2012, the award winning journal Exemplaria and the University of Texas convened 25 prominent scholars of medieval and renaissance studies to explore these questions.

New look for Exemplaria

The first issue of Exemplaria, with an article by Jacques Le Goff, was published in 1989. Since then the journal has established itself as one of the most consistently interesting and challenging periodicals devoted to Medieval and Renaissance studies. Providing a forum for different terminologies and different approaches, it has included symposia and special issues on teaching Chaucer, women, history and literature, rhetoric, medieval noise, and Jewish medieval studies and literary theory.

The Times Literary Supplement said of Exemplaria that 'it breaks into new territory, while never compromising on scholarly quality'.

Exemplaria receives the Phoenix Award for Significant Editorial Achievement

Exemplaria, received the 2011 Phoenix Award for Significant Editorial Achievement from the Council of Editors of Learned Journals (CELJ).

The CELJ is an organisation made up of editors of scholarly journals covering a range of subjects, and in 1987 it established the Phoenix Award to give recognition to the most improved journal, regardless of its state at the time renovations began.

Judges noted “significant development for this already excellent journal” over the past three years.
