Gaynor Redvers-Mutton

Business Development Manager, Maney Publishing

Background
I joined Maney as the Business Development Manager two years ago in April 2009. My career has spanned most aspects of academic publishing, starting with managing and then commissioning new journals at John Wiley & Sons and then to acquisitions roles in Wiley’s professional and later college book publishing departments. I started up a new list within the textbook publishing programme at Thomson Learning before it changed to Cengage. I then switched tack to work on the “client-side” with the Society of Chemical Industries as Publications Manager where I served as the bridge between the society and their publisher.

But I missed the fun of the publishing environment, and buzz of acquisitions, so am now very happy to belong to the Maney Business Development team. The company is young and dynamic, wants to invest in new business, and attracts societies by its mix of personal attention and engagement, subject expertise and professionalism. Maney’s roots are in society publishing and it has an inherent orientation towards truly understanding what its partners need.

My work at Maney
What I love about my role at Maney is its great variety. With strong lists and commitments to grow both in Humanities and STM disciplines, my day can range from assessing start-ups with engineers, to researching opportunities in romantic studies, to negotiating a contract to publish a journal on behalf of a healthcare society! This is “managed diversity” as we seek to strengthen our position in our chosen subjects and find creative ways to build our lists and our market presence. When I represent the company to prospective societies or editors, I am proud to have such a strong team of professional colleagues who will deliver the promises that I make.

Current projects
I am about to pass on the baton of a very interesting and rewarding project that we have just signed with the International Institute for the Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works to the publishing team, who will nurture and develop their journal Studies in Conservation. Sad as I am to retire from day to day implementation of this project after building strong relationships with the participants, and after the many months planning how we could make a valuable contribution to both journal and society, I will be able to view its progress from a distance, and meanwhile am off chasing the next horizon.

I have a particularly appealing spread of active projects on the go at this time, some for 2012 and some for 2013 or beyond, and new ideas to explore are constantly presenting themselves. Working in a company that has experienced such dramatic growth, and during an eventful period for scholarly communications with all the opportunities that digital publishing offers, each assessment of a new project needs to account for where we see our customers and our own future being.
