Shelly Turner

Director of Sales and Marketing, Maney Publishing


Background
I have been in the academic publishing industry since 1989 and have enjoyed a varied and rewarding career to date. Throughout my career I have been responsible for developing and evaluating marketing strategies in various roles, both at Emerald (originally MCB University Press) and Maney Publishing.  

I started my career at Emerald and held various marketing roles throughout my time there, including the management and development of a consortia department, progression of the corporate and public sector marketing strategy, as well as the expansion of the renewal programme. Whilst at Emerald I was fortunate to be offered the opportunity of undertaking their internal management development programme and through this route successfully obtained an MBA in 1996.

I joined Maney in 2005 as Journal Sales Manager in order to develop a programme to sell our MORE (Maney Online Research E-journal) packages to our customers and consortia groups worldwide. In June 2007 I was promoted to Director of Sales and Marketing, and am now responsible for the overall sales and marketing strategy in order to maximize revenue opportunities from current titles for the company.


 

 

My role at Maney
My role at Maney involves management of four departments within the Sales and Marketing area including direct sales, corporate marketing, direct marketing and promotions, and the overall renewal strategy and subscription management/customer service function.

My day to day work involves formulating, directing and overseeing marketing activities in all aspects of the sales and marketing function including face to face sales, lead generation, direct marketing, customer development (including upselling and cross-selling) and customer retention. Latterly I have also taken responsibility for negotiating with partners and customers for non-subscription revenue including local hosting and e-books.

I am fortunate to have the support of a strong team of colleagues from my own area and also from the other departments within Maney, so that we can fulfil our promise of delivering high quality academic content that is international in scope and peer-reviewed.

Focus for 2012/2013
Throughout the last couple of years we have experienced a significant shift within our customer base from paper to online-only journal subscriptions and licences. Our major focus for 2012/2013 is therefore the promotion and development of our electronic MORE packages to ensure we can meet the needs of our customers and be in a position to further develop our offerings to suit the changing needs of the markets we serve.

About our MORE packages
Various licensing options have been designed to suit the differing needs of academic institutions worldwide. They aim to reduce the unit cost of information whilst at the same time expand access to a wider range of electronic content. Licensing the full collection of electronic journals represents the best value of money for multidisciplinary universities wishing to provide the greatest breadth of content to their users. We also deliver subject-specific and tailor-made packages.
